The Godfather Trilogy

Movie Franchises to revisit: The Godfather Trilogy

Crime | Drama | Thriller

Runtime: 8 Hours 57 Minutes

The trilogy begins with The Young Vito Corleone (Robert DeNiro) and his rise to power in New York, this originally being a prologue to “The Godfather, Part II” is now placed right at the start of the saga, making the later flashbacks of DeNiro much more effective and it sets the scene beautifully for the following wedding scene at the beginning of the original “Godfather” film.

With ageing Vito Corleone(Marlon Brando), sons: Sonny (James Caan), Fredo (John Cazale) and Michael (Al Pacino) along with the adopted Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall), soon we are presented with the familiar though very interesting plot, including severed horse’s heads, a lot of gunfire and various questions of morality.

The final scene of the first film is followed by the continuation of the same plot in “The Godfather, Part II,” this being another masterful act of editing. The consequences at the end of the second film (particularly the death of Fredo) are therefore a lot more harrowing and effective.

Soon, we are elegantly taken to the events surrounding the ageing Michael Corleone, including the surviving members of the original films and also introducing a whole new generation of people including Sonny’s illegitimate son Vincent (Andy Garcia) and Michael’s own daughter (Sofia Coppola), and there is another opposition character in the form of Joey Zasa (Joe Mantegna) and so the story continues, this with an even more grim and equally powerful finale.

On a whole, this is simply a masterpiece among movie franchises, the story exceedingly effective (being based on Mario Puzo’s successful novels) and the acting (particularly in the first two films) impeccable.

The Dark Knight trilogy

Movie Franchises to revisit: The Dark Knight Trilogy

Crime | Action | Thriller

Runtime: 7 Hours 37 Minutes

After Batman had been flapping around without any real sense of direction, Christopher Nolan took the helm for The Dark Knight Trilogy and was a huge success, with Christian Bale steadying the ship as the Caped Crusader. But a hero is only as good as his villains, and Batman’s iconic adversaries such as the Joker and Bane just enhance the franchise’s appeal.

The announcement of the sequel was met with some controversy, mostly due to the casting of Heath Ledger as the Joker. But as everyone knows, Ledger not only went on to prove his worth but also won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in the role of Joker. Sadly Heath never got to witness the popularity of his character and died before the release of the film. Today his legacy continues as one of the best actors in a comic book film.

It will be a sin to omit this:

“Wanna know how I got these scars? My father was…a drinker. And a fiend. And one night he goes off crazier than usual. Mommy gets the kitchen knife to defend herself. He doesn’t like that. Not one bit. So—me watching—he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it! Turns to me, and he says, “Why so serious, son?” Comes at me with the knife…“Why so serious?” He sticks the blade in my mouth…“Let’s put a smile on that face!”

It’s just a shame Ben Affleck’s Batman crashed and burned, and it still remains to be seen whether his replacement, Robert Pattinson, is good enough to lace Batman’s boots and revive one of the most successful movie franchises of the past.

Movie Franchises to revisit: Terminator

Action | Sci-fi

Runtime: 12 hours 25 minutes

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as a time-travelling cyborg sent to kill John Conner and hence ensure the rise of the machines. The Terminator (1984) was an impressively gritty affair that made Arnie a household name.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day came out to be a much bigger success than the pilot movie. Arnold Schwarzenegger, featured as a time-travelling cyborg sent to save John Conner. This transformation of character resulted in setting all the records in 1991. T2 allowed director James Cameron to go wild with impressive special effects and give the Terminator character just the right amount of depth to deliver the film’s emotional climax.

It’s a shame that the following four films couldn’t make such an impact on the audience. But we’re pretty much guaranteed, one of the most famous movie franchises will be back.

Movie Franchises to revisit: Avengers

Action | Adventure | Sci-fi

Runtime: 10 Hours 28 Minutes

The Avengers films include all the heavy-hitters: Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk, Black Widow, Thor.

MCU built this series for over a decade. Every superhero has a very crucial role to play in the series. The idea of Nick Fury assembling a team of the greatest superheroes of MCU resonated with the audience to the highest possible level.

The clashing personalities of Iron Man, a self-described “Playboy billionaire” who doesn’t play by the rules and Captain America, a man thrust forward in time from the 1940s who still has his sense of values and morals from his time adds more depth to the narrative.

The duels between Thanos and Captain America and between Thanos and Iron Man were the grandest duels one may ever ask for. Thanos’ anti-hero dialogues: “You could not live with your own Failure, and where did that bring you? Back to me.” and the iconic dialogue “I am Iron Man” sends chills down the spine of the audience.

Mission Impossible

Movie Franchises to revisit: Mission Impossible

Action | Adventure | Thriller

Runtime: 13 Hours 02 Minutes

All the films in this franchise are major on the action, entertainment and high-tech gadgetry, and their explosive soundtracks are a serious workout for any audio system.

Whenever someone brings up Mission: Impossible, my go-to response is “You know Tom Cruise does his stunts?” So here I go: Did you know Tom Cruise does his stunts? Seriously. That alone makes these dazzling action films worth the watch.

The Hangover

Movie Franchises to revisit: The Hangover

Comedy | Crime

Runtime: 5 Hours 02 Minutes

The Hangover series is a typical example of Todd Phillip filmography. Movie has a very simple plot in all the three movies one of the friends either gets lost or gets kidnapped.

The characters keep the audience giggling throughout the series. Zach Galifianakis, himself is craziness personified, and when he Ken Jeong joins the cast the craziness gets to its peak.

Toy Story

Movie Franchises to revisit: Toy Story

Animation | Adventure | Comedy

Runtime: 6 Hours 15 Minutes

The series starts with a question. What is a toy’s greatest fear? That a newer toy may become the child’s most affectionate toy, thus condemning the one-time favourite toy to a lonely shelf or a darkened closet.

In case you didn’t know, the original Toy Story was the first feature-length film to be made entirely from CGI. It’s not only entertaining and colourful enough for kids to enjoy but it’s also packed with plenty of nostalgia and childhood memories which are more than capable of reducing grown adults to tears.

There’s never a bad time to relive your childhood. Take a stroll down memory lane with Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie, and all your favourite toys from Andy’s seriously impressive collection.
