With the escalation of work from home jobs these days, work-calls, streaming, teachers teaching, or even friends seeing each other over the internet, the necessity of a good webcam has never been higher.
Even with the advent of technology, even in 2021, laptop manufacturers still sell laptops with sub-par webcam and microphone hardware. The matter of fact is that even phones from 2015 have better cameras than 2021 laptop webcams. Hence, in this article I will be demonstrating how I repurposed an old phone as a wireless 4K webcam for free, that wipes these in-built webcams off the floor, in terms of quality, and with little to no latency at all.
How I Repurposed an Old Phone as a Wireless 4K Webcam
Download the “Iriun 4k Webcam for PC and MAC” application from the Google Play store or the apple AppStore as follows –
On your PC or Mac, download and install the Desktop Client from here – https://iriun.com/.
Make sure that both your phone and your PC are connected to the same wifi network.
Launch the Iriun App first on your Phone and check the following box, click continue-
It will prompt you, asking for various permissions. Accept them. Your setup on your phone is done.
Launch the Iriun Desktop Client.
It will automatically connect to your phone, given that the application is open on both devices, and that they are connected to the same Wifi network.
Voila! You’re done. You can now mount the phone wherever you wish, one clever way is that you can use an old empty cassette tape case as follows –
Due to the simplicity of this setup process, there’s barely any tweaking that one might want to do. However, what you can do on your phone is as follows –
You can select which camera you want to use for the webcam, I highly suggest using the back camera. You can choose the orientation as Portrait or Landscape depending on your use case. You can also use your phone’s microphone, but we suggest sticking with the default one.
On your PC you can only select the resolution, if your phone supports 4k, then it will allow you to use that, with absolutely no latency, even wirelessly.
Once you set the resolution and mount your webcam, you can now use it over your default camera in any app you wish, by selecting the Iriun Webcam as your video input, on any application as follows –
