Most of us face spam calls, scam calls, robocalls, and unwanted advertising calls daily. They are annoying at best but very dangerous at the worst. For example, some days back, my mom got a call from her alleged bank, which was very convincing, and she almost could have been trapped if she didn’t ask me once. Apparently, it was a big scamming group where even the call was automated like usually, the bank phone numbers are. Got the message from a very similar text address, and they even knew about her membership. But the website link that they shared when looked closely appeared phishy. This was a dangerous scam as it could have wiped her account clean, so today, we will be discussing ways to ban every spam call.
Most Effective Option:
With this feature turned on, you can only get calls from your contacts and numbers, which are in your list of outgoing calls, outbox texts, and numbers from Siri suggestions. This method will silence all the unknown calls and send them automatically to voicemail. If there’s any chance that the caller is legitimate, the call will still appear on your list of recent calls.
Step 1: Go to Settings > Phone > then turn on “Silence Unknown Callers.”
Block through third-party apps:
Most carriers in the USA offer scam protection through their apps without any additional cost outside of the plan and even if you don’t have these carriers or you’re based outside of the USA, we have mentioned a general spam blocking app free for everyone.
AT&T: Call Protect
Call Protect by AT&T is a free service designed to block fraud robocalls and scam calls. Call Protect won’t totally stop telemarketer calls, but it will at least display a “nuisance warning” when you receive those. There is also a Call Protect Plus that offers caller ID, reverse number lookup, and the ability to even block voicemails. This service is only available to AT&T post-paid users.
T-Mobile: Scam Shield and Scam Block
T-Mobile has an app called Scam Shield to block annoying robocalls and other scamsters. The free-to-download Scam Shield app bundles all T-Mobile’s various tools — Scam ID, Scam Block, and Caller ID; users can enable and disable multiple tools as per their need. Suspicious calls are flagged by default. Scam Block will prevent many of the spam calls from even ringing your phone if you enable it. And, even if the person contacting you isn’t in your contacts, T-Caller Mobile’s ID service will frequently display their details.
You can also turn on scam block without scam shield app by dialing #662# and disable it by dialing #632#. Scam shield is again free for all post-paid users, but Scam shield pro costs 4$ per month.
TrueCaller is the most popular call detection and spam blocking app, with more than 270 million active users worldwide. For free, it offers to block spam calls and texts. Even if you don’t enable block all known spam calls, it will show you a red alert whenever you get a call from a telemarketer, spammer, or fraud robocall. Truecaller app has a full-fledged dialer, call recorder, and text app included – I personally never liked the appearance of their dialer, though. It even has a premium mode where it allows people to search for users with phone numbers, call recordings, and some other perks.
Now how to enable any app such as above to block calls in iPhone:
When you receive a phone call, your device checks the caller’s phone number against a list of phone numbers stored in your third-party spam apps. IOS shows the app’s identifying label, such as Spam or Telemarketing, if a match is found. If the app finds that a phone number is a spam, it may automatically block the phone call. It is also important to know that incoming calls are never sent to third-party developers.
Step 1: Go to Settings > Phone
Step 2: Tap Call Blocking & Identification
Step 3: Below Allow These Apps To Block Calls And Provide Caller ID, turn the app on or off. You may also reorder the apps based on priority. To do that, just tap Edit and then drag the apps in the order you want them.
