So You Want Your Dogs to Stop Biting Your Things

So You Want Your Dogs to Stop Biting Your Things
Coco and Hazel (L to R)

It’s been three years since I was blessed with my first pet, Hazel; last year she had babies, and we decided to keep one of them, Coco. A lot of unexpected damage has been done by my dogs during these three years. This is something every dog lover goes through in his life. Though dogs make great use of their sense of smell to explore the world, one of their favourite ways to try something new is by using their mouth.

So, how to teach them to stop gnawing things? Luckily, chewing can be directed onto proper items so your dog isn’t destroying valuable things. It’s not as simple as it seems. You have to teach them what they can and can’t chew. Even after purchasing toys for them, they may ruin objects at your house. Firstly, you need to keep objects out of their reach whenever you leave them alone. Since I own two German Shepherds, the strength of the toys matters a lot. I will recommend some toys later in this blog. Puppies tend to chew inappropriate things more than adult dogs. Hazel hasn’t broken anything for the past two years; Coco, on the other hand, occasionally break things.

Understanding why?

Dogs may chew things for a variety of reasons; it varies from dog to dog. Coco gnaws things when she is upset – mostly when I go outside without her. It’s very common for puppies to chew whatever they find due to teething. To deal with this behaviour, you must first determine why your dog is chewing – they are not doing it to spite you. When Hazel was a pup, she used to run away grabbing my floaters with her mouth. She eventually stopped this practice when I stopped chasing her back. The more you chase, the more they will run away with your things.

Teach what to chew

It may take sometime before your dog understand which things he can or can’t chew. You need to be patient when dealing with your dogs. Unless your dog learns, keep your belongings out of their reach. Add treats in the toys to make them attractive to your dog. Use their toys to feed them; play with them using those toys. Once a toy starts to amuse your dog, he may not break things.

Have realistic expectations

At some point, your dog will inevitably chew something you value; Your dog needs time to learn the house rules, and you need to remember to take precautions and keep things out of their reach.

Take care with punishment

Never hit your dog; it can make them aggressive. Scold them whenever they break something. Remember, it works best when your dog is caught doing mishap. You can also take their favourite toy from them for some time or their favourite treat as a corrective measure.

I will attach the links to amazon.in and flipkart.in for every toy I talk about in this blog. I will detail the benefits of every toy on this list; this list isn’t ranked in any preference. While searching for a sturdy toy I wasted loads of money so I will recommend going for one of my recommendations.

1: Goofy Tails Rubber Chew Ball with holes

pet toy

This toy is a perfect choice in this price range (250 rs). It lasts long, and these holes aren’t just a design gimmick, they’re pretty useful. I used to stuff dog munchies inside the ball and it would keep my dog indulged for some time to take those munchies out of the ball. I have purchased 2 of these till now. This ball can be small for some dogs; hence, I would recommend this toy for small and medium breeds.

2: Kong Squeezz Ball Medium

pet toy

Kong is known for toughness when it comes to dog toys. This toy is one of their cheapest offerings, and it’s great. Every Kong toy comes in different sizes. The medium size can be small for some large breeds so purchase the size as per your dog. It has a squeaker which will allow it to be appealing to your dog for a long time.

3: Kong Jumbler Football Toy

pet toy

This toy is a treat to your dogs; it has a tennis ball trapped inside a transparent rubber football and also a squeaker. Some of the people claim it to be less tough than classic Kong black toy – I will talk about it below. In my case, it has survived the constant beating of two dogs for a year. They play tug of war with it; it has space on both the sides of the ball so it’s a great toy if you have more than one dog.

It’s the most expensive toy in the list along with jumbler. It has a hole on the top which can be used for the treats. Every Kong toy comes in different sizes so purchase it as per your dog; if the toy is too small for them, they may not enjoy playing with it. Besides the high cost, it doesn’t really have any cons.
