Apple took the world to a surprise when they announced their plans at WWDC 2020. There were mixed reactions to it, but with their 2020 M1MacBooks, Apple has made it clear that they should have switched earlier to M1 Macbooks. Apple’s independent software and market share make it implausible for developers to be reluctant to create alternative and (mostly) the same popular applications for Macbooks. First generation Macbooks were announced in October, and we expect 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch Macbook Pro to be launched in the third quarter of 2021. Since 14-inch MacBook Pro is the newest and most exciting addition, we will be discussing what we know so far about it.
Bigger and Better Display
When Apple refreshed the MacBook pro 15-inch to 16 inches, they increased the screen size and reduced the bezels to achieve that. I expect them to do it similarly except rumours suggest that there’s a whole new exciting body. Apple is also going to change the years old LCD panel of MacBook to mini-LEDs. The benefits of the new mini-LED display are better colour production, higher contrast ratios, HDR and local dimming. Mini LED technology should also help with battery performance due to better power efficiency.
If Apple shifts to mini-LEDs for the 2021 MacBook Pro models, about 10,000 LEDs, each under 200 microns in size, could be used in the display. Mini-LED technology will allow for a thinner and lighter design. Present Macbook Pro’s display lag when compared to some of its competitive laptops. So it is a great reason to wait for the new 14-inch MacBook Pro.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman have indicated that there is an extensive redesign for the 14-inch MacBook Pro. Some of the key features are flat-edged boxy iPhone 12, iPad Pro like design. Kuo claimed that the iconic Touch Bar will be removed from the new 14-inch MacBook Pro, and it will be replaced by physical function keys. M1 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020) took a step back from its predecessors in terms of connectivity since it had only two thunderbolt ports and no multiple display support. The New 14-inch MacBook Pro will have more thunderbolt ports, an HDMI port, an SD card reader, and MagSafe charging – Yes! the beloved MacBook charging feature is rumoured to return.
New M1X Chip
We all did see how Arm-based M1 smokes the competition when it comes to CPU performance; well the new ones are going to be extensively faster. The next iteration of Apple engineered Mac chips is likely to be called M1X. The M1X is rumoured to come with 12 cores – 8 power cores, and four 4-efficient cores. LeaksApplePro and others have reiterated the information about the new M1X.
Better GPU Performance
If there’s one thing where 2020 MacBooks lag the most is GPU performance; GPU performance is not bad but competition is way ahead with their discrete GPUs. We can expect up to 16 core GPU option in the new 14-inch MacBook Pro which is exactly double the cores in present M1 Macbooks. So, the performance gap is going to be huge. If you’re someone who needs high GPU performance then you should wait for the new 14-inch MacBook Pro. But keep in mind that even though GPU performance is going to be much better, it’s highly unlikely to be comparable to top discrete GPUs that are popular in windows laptops.
Better Battery Performance
The 2020 M1 Powered MacBooks have performed incredibly well when it comes to battery performance. The M1 chip has made the new MacBooks tremendously battery efficient, without bumping up the Battery size significantly. The battery life that 2020 M1 MacBooks offers is way ahead of the competition.
The new 14-inch MacBook Pro (2021) with a Mini LED display, and an even better optimized M1X chip will boost the battery life to a whole new extent.
Face ID and 1080p Webcam
The addition of FaceID to MacBooks is very probable as the iPad Pro already supports FaceID as an biometrics. The instant wake up feature of Big Sur will complement it well – (Just unfold the laptop and voila! you have an unlocked booted up MacBook pro). Mask should not be very annoying as well for laptops because how often will you work on your laptop in a crowded place. Apple didn’t change the years old 720p webcam in 2020 M1 MacBooks, but rumours suggest that Apple might finally take the plunge; We can expect 1080p Webcam for the new 14-inch MacBook Pro (same as 27 inch iMac), but take this leak with a grain of salt.
Tell us in the comments which rumoured Macbook pro 14 inches feature excites you the most.
